Four full-size Geisha portraits that symbolize the
cycle of time.
The painted patterns on the kimono’s indicate the different
seasons.
Winter - Bamboo leaves (they survive winter) Spring – Plum blossom (because
it
already blooms in February) Summer – Fronds of Wisteria (and peonies
for early summer) Autumn – Maple leaves (for their exciting Autumn
colors) etc. etc.
The floating lines trough the kimono’s represent water and relativity
of life
(life flows; things go by) The length of the sleeves tells something
about the age
of the geisha. The back ground-shadows refer to the ‘sisterhood’:
When a young woman
(maiko)
enters the geisha society, she is given
a ‘sister’ to guide her through the learning period as a mentor/friend.
